Valentine's Hearts?

昨日からまた雪が降り続いています。憂鬱な灰色の空の中、ちょっと面白いものを発見しました。
除雪トラックが駐車場を除雪後、積もった雪の上に
ハートマークが２つ。
偶然？

それとも絵心のある誰かが作ったものなのか分かりませんが、車のタイヤの跡が　Twin Hearts　の形で残っていました。２階の窓から見るともっとハート形に見えるのですが、写真は外で撮ったので少し分かりにくいかも。
今年のバレンタインデーは猛吹雪で殆どのお店は臨時休業、オハイオ州からの警報で外にも出れずバレンタインデーの贈り物やカードも買いそびれた人が多かったはず。そんな人がこのハートマークを雪の上に作ったのかもしれない、と密かに想像している訳です。

Snow storm - emergency level 3!

On Monday, we were warned of a coming snow storm. Snow had started falling overnight, but on the Tuesday morning (13th) strongs winds were gaining strength. Although the depth of snow was not much, the blowing and drifting snow created dangerous driving conditions. Most counties in the region were at level 2 snow emergency (strongly urges to stay off the roads unless you have to). Essentially all schools were closed but BGSU and UT hadn't decided on closing until about 8:30. The snow was getting heavier, the temperature down close to 0°F, and winds were strong. We went for a quick drive to get some groceries, but got stuck in a snowdrift on the road just outside our apartment when we got back. Luckily another resident was nearby to help push the car through. Soon our county was at level 3 emergency (not permitted to be on the roads). So we were housebound for the day.
In the end, Gavin had 2 days off school because of the snow days (Kozue liked having Gavin around for housework and company).

The following snow day (Wednesday 14th), the snowfall stopped in the morning, but the chilly strong winds continued that day. The snow emergencies continued so that the ploughing crews could get the roads opened up without the morning rush traffic. It was nice to have the sun come out again.

Daily Diet

カリフォルニア に住む友人が今後の参考にと乳ガン患者のための食生活に関する資料を送ってくれた。　乳ガンだと診断されてから色々なウェブサイトで乳ガンについてまた、その原因について調べた時に，日常の食生活が影響すると知ったが、自分ではそんなに悪い食生活をしているつもりはなかった。しかし、彼女が送ってくれた資料で気にも止めていなかった色々な食品が今後の生活にも大きく影響を与える事を認識させられた。例えば乳製品や肉類だが、ホルモン等で飼育している家畜には女性ホルモンであるエストロゲンが含まれる可能性がある。考えてみればなるほどと思う事だが、やはり言われるまで気が付かない。これは特に気を付けていなければならない所だった。と言うのも、病理検査の結果私のガン細胞はエストロゲンとプロゲステロンの受容体が陽性だったので、これらの女性ホルモンはその受容体と結合して乳ガン細胞の成長を増進させていた。そのため、乳ガンの再発を防ぐため今は　tamoxifen　というエストロゲン＆プロゲステロン受容体をブロックする薬を服用している。これが５年間続く。薬を飲んでいるからと言って安心はできないのは言うまでもなく、再発を防ぐための最大限の配慮はして行かないといけないと再確認した。他にもTrans fatの悪影響も報道されて、ニューヨークでは全てのレストランでその使用を禁止したのは耳に新しい。反対に、友人の送ってくれた資料の中にもかいてあったが、魚類は良い食品とされ、日本人女性に乳ガンが少ないのはその食生活にあるということだ。周囲にある食品にあらためて注目する必要を感じた。

Super Bowl

Yesterday, we are so excited about the Super Bowl. Actually, mostly Kozue was excited by watching the TV because Gavin had to prepare an examination for Monday. Anyway, why we are not in Indianapolis right now? We had lived there until last September. That is a shame. After we moved to Ohio, we knew that Colts were going to go to the Super Bowl, and we couldn't participate in the Super Bowl party in Indianapolis. On the TV, everyone was talking about the Super Bowl.
We were very worried with the initial handover touchdown (92 yards) but we stayed and were rewarded with an exciting game. Last year, the Colts were unable to make the Super Bowl, but this year they appeared in the Super Bowl for the first time and now are the champions! We are really happy as Colts fans! In this cold weather (today may be the record low temperature for Toledo area), watching TV is only fun for us.
昨日は久しぶりに燃えました、スーパーボウルで。テレビに向かって一人で騒いでいました。というのもギャビンは今日、月曜日のテスト問題を作っており、相手にしてもらえなかったからである。
でもどうして、私はインディアナポリスに居ないの？去年の９月までは居たのに、、、悔しいの一言であります。ここ、オハイオに引っ越して来てからColts　の　スーパーボウルに出場が決まりインディアナポリスでのお祭りには参加できないのは残念である。今日はテレビの何処を見てもスーパーボウルの話題で始まり、終わっている。去年は惜しい所まで行って、スーパーボウルの出場は果たせなかったチームであったけれど、初出場にして快勝というのはすごい。応援していた甲斐があった、と自己満足している。テレビ観戦はこの寒さの中（今日は歴代最低気温を更新するかも）、外出も避けて家で過ご すわずかな楽しみだ。

Wind Chill

Cold, very cold.
Since yesterday we had Wind Chill warnings that will be -21°F. The temperature will also be -4°F. That corresponds to a wind chill of -29.5°C, and temperature is -20°C!! What! We know this location is more northerly than Indianapolis but we didn't imagine it will be so cold. This cold weather is to continue until next week. Kozue said most of the houses in Hokkaido have double windows to protect from the weather. However we don't have such a device here. Anyway, our apartment is not sufficient enough to isolate such cold weather. Although we chose this apartment because of its location close to the shopping center, we doubt that the building itself has enough insulation. Around here, the winter scenery is beautiful but we wish to move to a warmer climate.
寒い、とにかく寒い。
昨日から"Wind Chill Warning"が出ていて、−２１F度だって。気温も最低温度が−４F度。ていう事は、摂氏でwind chillが　−２９、５度で気温が　−２０度！！え〜！インディアナポリスより北に位置しているのは分かっていたけど，こんなに寒いとは。この寒さが来 週いっぱい続くそうです。それにしても思うのが、こんなに寒くなる地方なのに、なぜか窓やバルコニーのドアは薄く、到底この寒さに対応しているとは思えな い。北海道の住宅は全て、２重窓になっており、それで暖房も節約できていると思う。今住んでいるアパートは２台あった車を１台に減らしたのでショッピング に便利な場所いうことで選んだ。しかし、壁は薄く、隣の音楽は大きく聞こえ、室内の温度は即座に外気に影響される。きちんと断熱材が入っているのかどうか 疑いたくなる。雪景色は美しく、感動するけれどこの寒さは頂けない。やっぱり、何処か暖かい地方への移住しかないな、と思うこの頃です。

Snow again

We were surprised by it snowing here. It is almost one week after Kozue came back from Japan. She said she had had enough snow in Sapporo, so she didn't want to see snow anymore. We wish that Spring will be coming soon.
日本から帰ってビックリしたのが、ここの雪です。帰って来てから約１週間になり、そろそろ時差ぼけもおさまってきましたが、ここの雪はおさまらず毎日降っています。北海道で、充分に冬景色を堪能して来たので、もう勘弁して〜という感じです。札幌では、徒歩３〜５分で買い物全てがまかなえる所にいたので出かけるのも楽しかったけれど、ここでは車が必要だし，増々外にでかけることがなくなり、体重は増えるばかり、、、春よ早く来て〜
