A popular drug

ここ一週間、寒い日が続いているがそれに共なってかどうか、すっかり風邪をひいてしまった。週末より調子が悪く、日曜日の礼拝も今日のキルトもお休みしてしまった。また、日曜日は一日中雪が降り７インチの積雪。その大雪の中ギャビンに風邪薬”Theraflu"を買いに行ってもらったのだが、ドラッグストアのレジの人に”この薬はこの所人気があって、今日はあなたで二人めです”　と言われたそうだ。知人も風邪でダウンしていたと聞いたが、随分と風邪をひいている人は多いらしい。あ〜しんど。早く良くならないかな〜。

Memorial Day 母の一周忌

今日は去年亡くなった母の記念日です。日本の仏教式でいう１周忌になります。もうあれから、一年が経ったなんて時の経つのは本当に速く感じます。特に母の記念会はしなかったけれども、今日は幸い日曜日で教会の礼拝もあり、良しとしようと自分で納得しています。去年、日本へ帰った時は放射線治療を終えたばかりで、自分の体調も完全ではなかったため、かなりしんどい帰国になった分けですが、帰って来てからすっかり体調も戻り、本当に感謝の一年でした。また、去年の夏は叔母や叔父たちが母の納骨をしてくれたので、こうして安心していられるのだと思います。ありがとうございました。

Red Lodge Ski Resort part II

今日は２度目のスキートリップ。１月１７日まで一人分のリフト代で二人分のリフト券が買えるので、どうしてもこの週末に来たかった訳です。前回は帰り道に雪で事故にあってしまったため、今週はやっとスノータイヤに履き替えてやって来ました。今日の天候は快晴で、路上には雪も無く快適なドライブでしたが、やはりハイウェイからスキー場入り口までの約６マイルは結構ラフな道路状況で、ところどころ凍結しておりスノータイヤをはいて来たかいあり。
Today we had our second ski trip. We really wanted to go this weekend because we can get a discount for lift tickets -- two adults for the price of one. Last time when we were on the way home we had a car accident because of the snow, so we had snow tires installed for this trip. Today's weather was fine and sunny, the drive was easy because there's no snow on the road. However, after the highway, the local road for the ski resort entrance, about 6 miles, was rough and icy. So we are happy to have snow tires this time.

スキー場は前回よりも人が少なく、リフト待ちも全くなく日本のスキー場とは大違いです。おかげで、思いっきり滑って来ました。今回は前日にビリングスのスキー専門店で自分のスキー靴にあわせたスキーを借り、やっぱり道具が良いと全然違う。１５年のブランクも何とか取り戻せそうな感じで、爽快に滑って来ました。ギャビンも前回よりは遥かに上達し、今回は初心者コースでも一人で降りて来る事が出来ました。（もちろん、何度も転びながらの様ですが）。
There were not many people this time so there were no lines for the ski lifts and that is very different from ski areas in Japan. So we could ski as much as we wanted. Also, we had rental skis from a ski shop in Billings. Good equipment makes us perform better on the slopes. This time, Kozue did better than before, even though she hadn't skied for 15 years. Gavin is also better than last time, then he came down the slope by himself alone (without Kozue as trainer) but of course he fell over many times.

Mule Deer

先週末、ゴルフ場の近くを車で走っていて見つけたMule Deer。私たちが中西部で見ていた鹿とはちょっと違っていて、体の色も顔の模様も今までに見た事のない鹿達です。この地方では良く見かけるらしいのですが、まさかゴルフ場の芝生を食べに来ているとは。冬になって、食べ物が不足しているのでしょう。それにしても、すっかり人間慣れしているようで、近くによってカメラを向けてもあまり怖がらず食事を続けていました。
Last weekend, we found mule deer in a golf course when we were driving by. This mule deer is different from the brown deer we used to see in the Midwest. In this area, we can often see mule deer, but we didn't expect to see these deer on the golf course eating the grass. So probably they do not have enough food in their regular habitat because of the winter. Anyway, they seem to be tame - not scared of humans. Even Kozue came close to them to take the photos, and they were not scared at all, they just continued to eat the grass.

新年のご挨拶 Greetings for the New Year

新年、明けましておめでとうございます。
Happy New Year!

こちらは大晦日から降った雪も解けてしまうような暖かさで、今日の最高気温は４４F、明日は５０Fまで上がるそうです。本当に標高３０００ftの山岳地帯に住んで居るのかな？と不思議になるほどです。中西部、東部、またフロリダでは雪まで降っているそうですが、ここビリングスは雪も無く、あまり寒くもなく快適です。でも、どこかへ出かけるには何処も遠すぎて、せいぜいスキーにいく程度でこのホリデーも終わりです。今日から近くの小中学校は始まっており、ギャビンの大学も９日より春学期が始まります。
We had snow on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, but now it has all melted because of the warm temperatures. Today we have 44 F and tomorrow it will be 50 F. We are wondering if we really live in the mountains at 3000ft elevation. In recent days there have snow in the Midwest, on the Eastern seaboard, and even Florida. Here in Billings, we are enjoying a nice climate without any snow. However, this place is far away from everywhere else, so we are stuck here. We can only go skiing nearby. The neighboring elementary and junior high schools are starting their spring semester today, also Gavin's college will start on the 9th.

もう一つ報告は、大晦日の礼拝で私たちは正式にここの教会メンバーになり、晴れて聖餐式に参加できるようになりました。クリスマス前に、教会の写真を撮ったので載せておきます
We have one more piece of news - we became communicant members in the church in Billings on New Year's eve, so we can now have Holy Communion. Kozue took some pictures of the church that follow.
