Season's greeting

来週の月曜日で放射線治療が終了ということもあり、３日前にクリスマスツリーを出しました。とても簡単な飾り付けなのに、大変だったのはやはりギャビンより大きなツリーだったからだろうか。ということで、ギャビンとツリーの高さを比較してみました。このとおりです。

また、ここに来て疲労感が増してきたのは、放射線治療の最終の週だからだそうです。あと、三日、二日と思って毎日を過ごしてきましたが、あと１回の治療を残すだけとなりました。のどは未だに慢性炎症のため苦しい時もありますが、マイナーな副作用の他ここまで大きな問題もなく来れたのは感謝です。

Cold... and Snow!

We didn't update this blog for a while because Kozue is taking radiation therapy every day, and the days pass quickly. However, the treatment is going to finish in 1 more week.
随分長くこのブログをお休みしてしまいました。
放射線治療のため、毎日があっという間に過ぎてしまいます。でも、あと１週間で終わります。長かったような気もするし、終わりに近付いてみると案外短かったような気もします。

By the way, lately the cold weather has arrived (20°F, or -6°C). The snow from last night still remained this morning. On the news, many people in Michigan state and around Chicago have no power right now. But, we have less snow here than in their areas.
さてさて、この所寒い日が続いていましたが（20F前後＝-6度C）、昨夜降った雪は今朝になっても解けずに残っていました。ミシガン州やシカゴ辺りでは大雪で停電が続いていると言う事ですが、こちらは御覧の通りうっすらと地面がかくれる程度の量でしかありません。





If we have more snow, we can take prettier pictures, but much snow makes driving more difficult. Anyway, winter has come. According to the forecast, this year is supposed to be warmer than last year, but we don't know yet. In this season, we are excited because of Christmas, actually Christmas presents. We have received parcels from Australia but we are waiting to open them on Christmas day.
もう少し降るときれいな景色が撮れるのですが、あまり降り過ぎると車の運転に支障が出て来るので難しい所です。しかし、本格的に冬です。今年はあまり寒くならないと言う事ですが、どうでしょうか。それでも、クリスマスが近付いてちょっとワクワクしているのはやっぱりクリスマスプレゼントだよね〜。オーストラリアからも届いている荷物をクリスマスの日にあける事になっています。楽しみ〜。

Daily activities (Gavin version)

This is the chemistry building where Gavin's office is located. His office is on the first floor, and is to the back of the tutor room.

ここが ギャビンのオフィスのあるChemistry Departmentの建物です。彼のオフィスはこの１階のTutor room の奥にあります。

Recently, his name-tag was installed on the door. According to the Department chair, this is his temporary office and he could have a better office in the next semester. However, the way the name-tag was installed makes it seem that the office is permanent (Kozue thinks: Gavin will stay here next semester too).

つい最近やっとドアに名前が入りました。Department chairにここは臨時のオフィスで、次の学期までにはもう少し快適なオフィスを用意しますからと言われたそうですが、すでに名札は釘ねじでつけあるので、私（kozue)が思うに彼は来学期もここにいる事になるのではないかと思います。

He used to have a nice office with big windows through which he could see the downtown buildings of Indianapolis. As you can see, there is no window here.

Indianapolisのオフィスは窓も大きくダウンタウンを見る事ができましたが、ここはご覧の通り窓はありません。

But, one thing hasn't changed: that his office is always messy. Kozue is wondering if he can find anything?

でも、何処に行っても変わらないのがこの通りの散らようです。きたな〜い。これで、何が何処にあるのか分かるのかな？






This is the building with large lecture theatres where Gavin teaches freshman chemistry courses everyday.

ここは大きなレクチャーホールが幾つも入っている建物です。毎日ここで１年生の化学を教えています。




This is the Student Union Center which is newly built (only 1 year ago). In this building, there is a food court, Starbucks coffeeshop, bookstore, and mini art gallery where student art is displayed. Lately, he often has lunch here because Kozue doesn't make the lunchbox (Kozue's lazy). Why are the prices in the food court at any university so high?

これはStudent Union Centerで、１年程まえに新しく立て直したそうです。フードコートの他Starbucks coffee, Bookstore, 小さな展示室もあり学生達の作品展示もしています。最近はお弁当を持って行かない時も多いので、ここで昼食をとる事が多いようです。（私が怠けてお弁当を作らないので、、、でも、大学のフードコートは何処に行っても高い。なぜ？）

The computers in the Student Union Center are all Apple Macs which are better than the Mac in Gavin's office. He always complains about that.

この中に置いてあるコンピューターはなぜか全てMACでギャビンのオフィスにあるものよりはモニターも大きく、ソフトも最新のものが入っています。（ギャビンはいつも文句を言っている）

Daily activities (Kozue version)

Since October 24th, Kozue has been taking radiation therapy for 5 days a week (total of 7 weeks) at a university hospital near home. Now she is getting busy every day. Since we sold Gavin's car before moving to Ohio, we have to share Kozue's car. Every morning about 8 am, we leave together to Gavin's office, then Kozue goes to hospital. In the hospital, actual therapy takes only a few minutes but sometimes she has to wait in the waiting room for a while. Therefore, she comes back home between 10 and 11 in the morning. In the evening, Kozue goes to pick up Gavin at the office between 6 and 7 PM.

１０月２４日から週５日約７週間、近くの大学病院で放射線治療をを受ける事になり、毎日がとても忙しくなりました。引っ越し直前に、ギャビンの車を売ってしまったため、今は車一台で行動しなければなりません。朝8時過ぎにギャビンと一緒に彼の大学まで行き、そこから病院に向かいます。実際の治療時間は数分で、長くはありませんが、待ち時間がかかる事もあり帰って来るのはいつも１０時から１１時の間かな。夕方6時から7時頃までにまたギャビンを向かえに彼の大学まで行きます。

This is the university hospital where Kozue goes for radiation therapy. It is very nice and newly built. She parks the car on the left side of this building, and the entrance is on the right side.

ここが毎日通っている大学病院です。建物は新しく、とてもきれいです。いつもこの左側にある駐車場に車を止め、右奥にある入り口から入って行きます。



She goes through the cafeteria on the way to radiation oncology. She sometimes has coffee at this cafeteria which is very nice and quiet. Some students study at the tables here. This photo is the part of the cafeteria which is a sunroom.

カフェテリアを通って放射線治療室に向かいます。治療が終わったあと、時々ここでお茶をして帰ってきます。ここはきれいで静かなので勉強している学生達を見る事があります。これはカフェテリアの一部にあるサンルームです。


After the cafeteria, she uses the elevator to go to the ground floor. Then, she gets in the door with this sign. Although the signage is uninteresting, the staff are friendly and fun people.

カフェテリアを通り抜け、ドアの向こう側にあるエレベーターでground floor に下がり、このサインのあるドアから受付に入ります。面白みのないサインが下がっていますが、ここのスタッフ達はとても楽しい人たちばかりです。



After signing in at the reception, she waits for her turn in the waiting room. In the waiting room, there is a TV, jigsaw puzzle, magazines and even coffee.

ノートにサインを済ませ、この通路の反対側にある待合室で呼ばれるまで待ちます。コーヒーも用意してくれているし、ジグソーパズル、テレビ、もちろん雑誌もありで待っている間も退屈する事はありません。


Every Monday, the patients have a meeting with their doctor to report if there are any side effects, any change in symptoms, and process of treatment. In Kozue's case, she has been having a sore throat and it feels like there is a foreign body on the inside of the throat. Now she is taking a medicine, but the symptoms may continue until the end of treatment.

毎週月曜日は医者との面接があり、治療経過や副作用の有無等を報告します。私は先週からのどの痛みと異物感があり、薬をもらいましたが治療が終わるまで完治は無理かな。


This is a model in the exam room, so she can describe which part of the throat has the problem. Tomorrow is the day of the meeting with the doctor. Even though Kozue tries to have soft food to reduce the symptoms, the doctor could have more advice for her.

これは診察室にあった模型です。これで、のどのどの辺りに異物感があるのか説明できます。
明日はまた、診察日です。食べ物も柔らかいものに変えましたが、もう少しのどの痛みと異物感がとれるような方法を聞いてみようと思います。

Halloween night

October 31, it was Halloween. Gavin was ready for “trick or treat” at night with his new costume. Unfortunately, no children visited us that night. But we took some photos for fun.

On the day, the staff at Department of Radiation Oncology in the hospital prepared some goodies for their patients.

１０月３１日はハロウィーンで、ギャビンもコスチュームを用意して子供達の訪問を待っていましたが、残念ながらこのアパートには誰も来ませんでした。それでも、写真は撮って楽しんでいます。また、毎日通っているRadiation Oncology　でも楽しいgoodiesを患者さん達のために用意して下さっていました。

After snow... 雪のち...

Just last week, we had snowflakes. But today, we have warm weather (70F). It is like the beginning of summer with clear sky. I (Kozue) visited a MetroPark on the way home from hospital where I have radiation therapy, and walked about 2 miles. Finally, I met a big deer in the park (it was scary). Then I got into the Wildlife Window where I could observe birds. Luckily, I saw several Blue Jays, which I always wanted to see. There are plenty of signs of the middle of Fall and it's too early for winter yet.

つい先週雪が降ったと思ったら、今日はいきなり70度の半袖日和です。初夏のような晴れ晴れとした良い天気。この天候の変 化に混乱しながらも、病院の帰り道にあるMetroParkに立ち寄り、2マイル弱歩いてきました。そこで、ついに出会った大きな鹿（恐かった）。気を取 り直して入ったWildlife Windowから思いがけず、念願のBlue Jayを観察する事ができました。公園の中はまだまだ秋の気配が一杯で、冬が来るのにはまだ早過ぎるよね。

It is Sunday, today. 今日は日曜日。

Since today is Sunday, it is the day for us to go to church. These are some photos of the Church (lutheran, Missouri Synod) we go to here in Perrysburg.

今日は日曜日、教会に行く日です。この写真はここに越して来てから通っている近所のルーテル教会（ミズーリ派）です。


The service is very traditional, and most of the members have grown up here and lived here for a while. Gavin and Kozue are the only people wearing jeans in the church! However, some members in the church have made us very welcome and have been kind to us since going there.

礼拝はとてもTraditionalな形式で、メンバー達はここで生まれ育ったというような地元の人たちばかりのようです。ジーンズをはいているのはギャビンと私だけです。しかし、新参者のしかもまだメンバーではない私たちにも、皆さん親切で良くして下さいます。


The church has holy communion on the 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month. Usually, holy communion is reserved for members, but visitors may commune if they see the Pastor or Minister and obtain consent before the service. We had consent last month; at the time the minister gave us three questions: "Are you baptised Christians?", "Are you members of a Lutheran Missouri Synod church?" and "Do you believe that the bread is truly the body of Christ, and that the wine is truly the blood of Christ?" Then today, we had communion because it is the 5th Sunday of the month. Kozue is always wondering why this church uses white wine instead of red wine, while other churches use red wine. But she forgot to ask them today (she was going to ask before).

毎月第3と第5の日曜日に聖餐式があります。聖餐式はメンバーが受ける事ができますが、visitorsで聖餐式の希望者は牧師か長老の誰かと話し、許可を受けなければなりません。私たちはメンバーではないので、先月の聖餐式の時に長老の方と話し、許可をうけました。その時の質問は「あなたは洗礼を受けた、クリスチャンですか？」「あなたはルーテル教会のミズーリ派ですか？」「聖餐式のパンはイエスキリストの体、ワインはイエスキリストの血である事を信じますか？」というものでした。今日はその聖餐式のある日。いつも思うのが普通赤ワインを使う教会が殆どなのですが、ここは白ワインを使います。今度どうしてか聞いてみようと思いながら聞き忘れています。


By the way, today's service started with the adult choir. Even though the church is a small congregation, it has a wonderful choir. In addition, the pianist(organist) is very good too. Before today's service, we witnessed the baptism of an infant in a traditional Lutheran style. Here is one example where traditional style seems more meaningful than contemporary church style that many people tend to go for.

それは置いておいて、今日は聖歌隊の賛美歌から始まりました。ここは小さな教会ですが聖歌隊がとても素晴らしく、聞いていると本当に感激します。ピアノとオルガンの伴奏も素敵です。また、礼拝の前に生まれて間もない赤ちゃんの幼児洗礼があり、沢山の人がコンテンポラリーの教会に移る傾向がある昨今、いつにもましてtraditional styleも良いものだと思いました。

We recently moved from Indianapolis to Perrysburg, OH (part of Toledo metro area). While in the area, we wanted to visit the islands of Lake Erie. The picture shows us inside Crystal cave, Put-in-Bay, OH. This is inside a winery on the island. You can see the enormous crystals of celestite. The strontium within the mineral can be used for fireworks and for emergency road flares (bright red flame).
2か月程前にインディアナポリスからオハイオのペリスバーグに越して来たばかりです。ここは５大湖の一つであるエリー湖の近くで、トレド（人口約３０万人）の郊外です。ここにいる間に、エリー湖にあるプットインベイという島に行ってみたいと思っていましたが、10月の初めに友人達と一緒に訪ねる事ができました。この写真はその時にワイナリーの中にあるクリスタル洞窟で撮ったものです。ギャビンの左に写っている黄色の結晶はこの洞窟の中でも一番大きいものだそうです。この洞窟のストロンチウム結晶は粉状にして、花火や緊急用の火炎信号に使う事ができるそうです。

Put-in-Bay is a resort town on South Bass Island, well known for Perry's monument (tower used as a lighthouse). This was built in 1912 as a memorial to Commodore Perry's naval victory in Lake Erie against the British in 1812. This Oliver Perry is the big brother of Matthew Perry, who forced Japan to open up to trade with the West.
この島は主に避暑地で、ペリーの記念塔がある所として知られています（この塔は灯台としても使われています）。この塔はエリー湖において提督ペリー率いる海軍が、1812年にイギリス軍との戦いで勝利した１００年記念碑として1912年に建てられました。このオリバー•ペリーは日本開国を迫ったあの黒船ペリーのお兄さんでした。

Here is Perry's monument tower, and one of the views of Lake Erie from the tower. We definitely recommend visiting the tower if you have the chance.
