IN HOKKAIDO 2

One week after the viewing and the funeral, Kozue's mother ash was brought to the mother's hometown. This photo was taken from Kozue's mother's apartment which is on the 10th floor. You could see a couple of ski places in Sapporo.
お通夜、告別式と終わり、１週間後の日曜日は納骨に母の実家を訪ねた。その合間にこれは札幌の母が住んでいたアパートから撮った写真です。１０階からの眺めは抜群で、市内にあるスキー場も見る事ができます。何処を見渡しても雪ばかりであります。



Kozue's mother's hometown is 2 hours west from Sapporo. The name is Kyogokucho. It is located at the foot of Mount Youtei or called ''Ezofuji", which has a similar shape to Mt. Fuji. The town is well-known for having heavy snow and near to Niseko ski places. Since the town has a hot spring, tourists also visit in the summer. The photo below is taken from the house of Kozue's aunt. The mountain can be seen directly from the entrance to her house.
母の実家は札幌から西へ２時間程の京極町です。京極町は蝦夷富士と呼ばれる羊蹄山のふもとで、ニセコスキー場にも近く、冬は雪が多い所として知られています。温泉もあり、夏も観光客が多いそうです。下の写真は京極町に住んでいる叔母のうちの玄関から真正面に見えた羊蹄山です。



The aunt offered local cuisine for dinner, which is cooked cod roe with shirataki noodles. This meal can be seen only in the northern part of Japan. It was delicious.
その叔母が作ってくれたのが、北海道と東北地方でしか見ない料理で、生のたらこをしらたきと一緒に煮たなつかしいものでした。これが、またおいしかった。




Of course, sushi and hot pot soup with chicken meatballs was delicious. Kozue didn't take a photo but another aunt in Sapporo cooked a miso soup with cod soft roe and hokke fish was so good. Food in Hokkaido was so great. Kozue didn't have enough time to sleep since she arrived in Japan, so great food was the best cure.

当然、おすしと、暖かい鳥のつくねのお汁も頂きました。写真には撮らなかったけれど、札幌の叔母が作ってくれた、まだらの白子のみそ汁とホッケの開きも格別でありました。やっぱり、北海道の食材です。日本に着いてから、殆ど寝る暇がなく疲れきっていたので、おいしいご飯は最高の疲労回復治療剤でありました。

IN HOKKAIDO

January 10th, Kozue left the United States for Japan and arrived January 11th late in the night. She stayed in her friend's house that night near Tokyo. And the next day, she had an interview with the American embassy to apply for her visa. After the interview, she directly went to Haneda airport to fly to Sapporo. She arrived at Chitose airport around 8 pm, and then met her aunt at Shin Sapporo station. The aunt told her that her mother was in a critical condition, then they went directly to the hospital from the train station. When she saw her mother, the mother couldn't talk anymore but she recognized her daughter. In the next morning, 1:55am, Kozue's mother passed away.We thank everyone for praying for her mother.
１月１０日にアメリカを出発し、日本へは１月１１日夜遅くに成田着。そのまま埼玉の友人宅で一泊し、翌日はアメリカ大使館でビザ申請のための面接、その足で羽田空港へ向かい、夜６時半の飛行機で千歳空港着。夜９時過ぎに新札幌へ到着。そこで、叔母が私を待っていてくれたが、母の容態が７時頃から急変したとの事。そのまま駅から病院へ向かう。病室へ入ると、母は呼吸器をつけ、話もできず、それでも私が来た事は認識してくれた。その夜明けて、１３日午前１時５５分に他界しました。お祈り頂いた皆さんありがとうございました。

New Year in Chicago

We celebrated the New Year in Chicago but Kozue didn't have enough time to update the blog before going back to Japan. Here we have several photographs in Chicago. We stayed in Chicago from Dec 30th to Jan 2nd. During the time, we went to near Lake Michigan on New Year's eve and on New Year's day, we visited the Field Museum to see exhibition of Tutenkahmen from Egypt. In the museum, we had fun to see the dinosaur "Susan" again.

新年をシカゴで迎えましたが、ブログに載せる時間がなく日本へ帰国してしまいましたので、ここでいくつかシカゴで撮った写真を載せたいと思います。
シカゴへは年末の３０日から１月２日まで滞在。その間、大晦日はミシガン湖での花火、元旦はエジプトから来ていたツタンカーメンの展示物を見に博物館へと足を運びました。シカゴの博物館では恐竜のスーちゃんに再びお目にかかり、相変わらず「大きい！」を連発してた。

This is the display of the train at the entrance to the subway. We were surprised because it was a big model of a train. If you compare the size with the bus in front of the entrance, you'll see how big it is.

これは地下鉄の入り口に飾ってあった電車の模型です。大胆なディスプレイにビックリ。前に止まっているバスの大きさと比較しても分かる通り、かなり大きなディスプレイであります。


This big Christmas tree is next to the Picasso sculpture. We visit this plaza each time we visit Chicago.

この広場にはいつもこの大きなクリスマスツリーが飾ってあり、このツリーと一緒にすぐ横にあるピカソの作品を見るのが楽しみの一つです。

The ornaments of this tree are so big!!!

このツリーの飾り付けに使っているボールはこんなに大きい！！！

This is the sculpture by Picasso.

これがピカソの作品。

This is the fireworks show for the New Year period after countdown. Fortunately this night was not so cold. So this is very different from when we visited New York for New Year's day several years ago.

これは新年のカウントダウン後に上がった花火です。幸いこの夜はあまり寒くなく、花火が上がるのを待っていても苦にならなかった。数年前に行ったニューヨークの年末の寒さとは大違いです。


















This is the dinosaur "Susan". Her head is too heavy to hold by this skinny body so the real skull is displayed on the second floor.
これは恐竜「スーちゃん」。彼女の頭はあまりにも重くてこのキャシャな？体では支えきれないそうで、本物の頭がい骨は２階に展示してあります。



















So we couldn't take any photo for the exhibition of Tutenkahmen. We did take a photo in front of the big poster.

ツタンカーメンの展示物は撮影できないのでこの大きなポスターの前で記念撮影です。

We missed the urban city like in this photo because we live near the countryside in Ohio. Kozue really wants to live in the big city because it is easy to get Japanese food.

オハイオの田舎にすんでいるとこういう都会の景色が恋しくなるんだよね。日本食も手に入れるのは簡単だし、やっぱり都会は良いなあ、という結論です。

News from Japan

１２月１１日に放射線治療が終わり、これで体調も回復するだろうと思っていたのに相変わらずのど痛みと今度は咳。いつ良くなるのだろうと思っている所に札幌の叔母から電話があり１２月３０日に私の母が緊急入院したとのこと。どうやら肺ガンのようでCTスキャンの結果、脳にも転移していて７つ程の腫瘍が見付かったとのこと。重体でいつどうなるか分からないとの事で、急きょ帰省する事になりました。年末年始で何処も閉鎖しており、帰国のための 手続き（航空券、アメリカ大使館（東京）での面接等）がやっと今日つける事ができ、１月１０日から約２週間帰国します。
