Severe Weather

クリスマスも近くなり寒さも本格的になって来ました。先週末は寒いというよりは、痛いと言った方が良い程冷え込んだ。北海道育ちの私でさえびっくりの極寒。最低温度は−２０度F（−２９度C）！！！玄関のドアノブを触ると冷たいのではなく痛い。玄関先で温度を測ってみたら，この通り。この温度計ではここまで（−２０度C）しか測れない。それでも、信じられない温度の低さでした。今週末もまた−１６度Fまで下がるらしいです。外出は当分避けましょう。
As Christmas is coming soon, the weather is really cold. Last weekend, we had severe weather. We felt more pain than cold! Even Kozue, who had grown up in Hokkaido in Japan, was surprised because of such low temperatures. The lowest temperature was -20 degrees Fahrenheit (-29 deg C)!!! When we grabbed the entrance door knob, we felt pain rather than cold. And Kozue measured the temperature at the entrance, and that is shown in the following picture. The lowest temperature this thermometer can measure is about -20 deg Celcius. So actual temperature is lower than that. We have severe weather again this weekend. We are avoiding going outside.

家の中は床暖房なのでぽかぽか。クリスマスツリーを眺めながら週末を過ごします。
We have floor heating, therefore it is really warm. We just stay at home looking at our Christmas tree.
これはブラックフライデーにただでもらった，お猿のオーナメント。
We got this free monkey ornament on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

Footprint

一昨日は一日中雪がふり、昨日今日と気温が低いので雪も解けずにそのまま。
今日の最高気温は１８度F（約ー７度C）。ということで１０月に降った雪とは違いサラサラのパウダースノー。３年越しでやっと先月買ったスノーブーツの出番が来た。


ちょっと外の様子でもと思い家を出たら、何やら動物の足跡を発見。こんな感じで足を引きずったようなあとが庭に続いていた。

よく見るとどうやらアンテロープのようだ。ここの所彼等をあまり見なくなったのだが、いつも来る奴が来たらしい。それも、今朝。アンテロープは冬になると群れの数が増え、40〜50頭で一群をなすらしいのだが、こいつは一頭でも行動しているようだ。


もう１つ違う足跡を見つけた。これはいつものうさぎだろう。
それにしてもこの寒さの中よく生きているものだと感心する。

Birthday Quilt

１１月２５日はギャビンのお母さんの誕生日。
Gavin's mother's birthday was November 25th.

時間があまりなかったのでギャビンにも手伝ってもらい、誕生日プレゼントのキルトを作りました。ギャビンには簡単だと思ったアイロン掛けは上手くできないので、思いきってミシンに挑戦してもらったら、結構簡単にできたのです。やっぱり、ミシンが良いせいだと感心。さすが、ベルニナ。
Kozue didn't have much time left to make a birthday quilt for her, then Gavin helped to make the quilt. Kozue thought that ironing was easy for Gavin but it wasn't. So his assignment was piecing using the sewing machine. Unexpectedly he succeeded because the sewing machine was super. It is a Bernina.

これが共同作品。よくできました。これでギャビンも立派なキルターになりました。

Helena, MT

１１月３日、グリーンカードの為の指紋採取にモンタナ州の州都ヘレナの移民局サポート事務所まで行ってきました。ヘレナまではビリングスから約２５０マイル、時間にすると約４時間かかります。ア〜遠い。今回はギャビンと一緒に働いているインド人のロビンも同じ日に予約があったので、３人で出かけました。私の予約時間が午前十時だったので、ビリングスを午前５時に出発。途中、景色を見ながら、でもやっぱり遠い。


移民局のサポート事務所は、ヘレナ空港の近くにあり、こんなディスプレイも発見。本物のヘリコプターだと思いますが、どうでしょう。

指紋採取は１０時半頃終わり、３人でダウンタウンへ向かい、町並みを見学し昼食を取る事にしました。ヘレナは古い町並みがあり、住宅も教会も重厚な感じがします。

またヘレナはモンタナ最後の金鉱山があった所だそうで、至る所に鉱山があった事をしる、絵や像が見られます。





ついでに、この街にあるカトリック系のリベラルアーツの大学を見学。
科学科の建物はとても大きくて立派。ギャビンの大学とは大違い。

Chico again.

１０月末にアメリカ化学会の集会が Chico hot springs であり、またまた温泉に行ってきました。今年はこれで３度目になります。でも、今回はギャビンの仕事の経費で行けたので、得した感じ。御覧通り、ロッキーの山々は雪景色で、スキー場もそろそろオープンです。

今回宿泊したのは、Fisherman's lodge　と言って、本館の後ろの丘の上にありました。高い所から見る景色はなかなか良いものです。その、眼前下に馬の厩舎があり、ここではトレイルを馬に乗って歩いて行く事もできます。



この宿泊施設には幾つものオプションがあり、もう少し高い丘の上にはログキャビンもあります。次回、このログキャビンに宿泊できたらと思いますが、本館温泉プールに行くには少し不便かも。朝風呂は最高に気持ち良い！毎朝、新しいお湯を入れ替えてくれています。湯煙が何とも、温泉らしい。でも、やっぱりプールなんだけれどね。

Daylight saving time

Daylight saving のため、今日からまた１時間時計が遅くなった。このたった１時間なのだが、体の調子を合わせるのに苦労する。毎朝６時頃に起床するのだが、今日は起きたらまだ４時半。する事もないので、ブログを書いている。

一昨年までは、４月の初めから１０月の終わりまでがサマータイムだったのだが、去年からは３月初めから１１月の初めまで。そのため、このdaylight saving time　が始まる３月、また終わり頃の１０月には、朝６時と言っても外は真っ暗である。７時半すぎてから薄らと明るくなってくるが、お日様が照りだすのは８時過ぎ。従って、暗いうちに通勤、通学に家を出る人も多い。特に、子供達は暗い中スクールバスを外で待っていたりする訳で、事故に巻き込まれたりしないのかと思う。このDaylight saving を延ばした訳は、何だったんだろうとふと思ったけれど、きっとまた政治家の身勝手なのだろうと思ったりもすると、知らなくても良いと思った。

Escaping for freedom or food?

週末に降った雪が溶け出した昨日、見るもびっくり。
住宅街から少し離れた所にある、遊牧地から６〜７頭の馬が脱走！馬達は私の家から６軒先にある家の庭までたどり着き、芝生を食べだした。大雪で柵も役に立たず、馬達は容易に逃げ出したのだろうと思う。午後には全ての馬はまた、遠くに見える遊牧地に戻っていた。彼等にはつかの間の自由だったようだ。
The snow we had last weekend started to melt yesterday, and we had a surprise!
6 or 7 horses escaped from their ranch which is located west of our neighborhood. These horses reached the house, about 6 houses down and started to eat the lawn. Probably these horses ran away from the ranch because the big snowfall helped them to escape more easily from the fence. However, these horses went back to their ranch in the afternoon. It was a short time of freedom for them.


こんなハプニングが起きた日の夜１０時過ぎ、今度は家の庭にいつもとは違う訪問者が現れた。暗がりで何か動いているようなので、またアンテロープだろうと思ったが、どうも何時ものよりも大きく、角の感じが違う。ようく、見ると大きな牡鹿だ。角もかなり長く、迫力満点。いつものアンテロープの時のようにお勝手の戸を開けるのもちょっと恐い。暫くして何処かへ行ってしまったので、安心していると、今度は自分の家族6頭つれてやってきた。今まで、家の庭に鹿がやって来たのを見た事はなかったが、この大雪で、なかなかえさが探せずここまでやって来たのだろう。ここは、野生動物を間近に見るのにことかかない。でも、また芝生にダメージが、、、ショック。
On the same day after 10 pm, we had visitors in our backyard. I thought it was antelopes again, but it was a little bit different from regular antelope. It was bigger and had big antlers. That was a big male deer. So I was a little bit scared to open to the back door, which I always did when antelope came to scare the antelope away. After a short time, he was gone but he brought his family to our backyard. Until this time, we didn't see any deer in our backyard, probably they were looking for food because of thick snow cover. We always can see wildlife near us but our lawn has damage again... shock.

金曜日の夜から降り続いている雪はまだ、降りやまず未だこんな景色です。
Since Friday night, it was still snowing, and outside looks like this.


今回の雪は水分を沢山含んでいて、非常に重い雪であります。雪かきをするにもシンドイ。
家の前にある樹木も雪の重さで、おじぎをしたまま。
The snow is very heavy because it contains a lot of liquid water. Shovelling the snow is really, really hard. The tree in front of our yard is bending because of the heavy snow.

So there are icicles on the porch roof...

玄関を開けると、ほら、この通り吹きだまりができてる。
When we opened our door, we saw blown snow on our porch.

で、この雪質を利用して雪だるまをつくりました。へへ。
Then, we made a snowman. He he.

これが、この２日間で降った雪です。
This height is the accumulation of the snow for 2 days.

It is October!!!

そろそろクリスマスカードを用意する時期となりました。こんな写真はどうでしょう？

雪ですよ、雪！！！

１０月１０日に、大雪です！

It is snow... and more snow... in October!

この雪はどうやら来週の月曜日まで続き、積雪は１フィート以上になるということ。
あなた、信じられます？この２、３日前まで７５度F　あったにもかかわらず、今日いきなり３３度F　の寒さ。やっぱりここは、ロッキーの山岳地だったと言う事でした。
This snow storm will be continuing until Monday. And the accumulated snow is going to be more than 1 foot! Can you believe that? A few days ago we had 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and now the temperature has dropped to 33 deg F. After all, we live in a part of the Rocky Mountain region.

Lawn repair and trespassing

今の家は庭が広いのですが、芝生が荒れていて整備し直さなければなりませんでした。秋になってやっと芝生の種まきに最適の気候になりました。で、先月中旬に種をまき、３週間経ってやっと芝生の芽が見え始めました。嬉しいよねえ。

Our current house has a big yard but we need to restore the lawn. The Fall season is the best season for seeding the lawn. We seeded the lawn in the middle of last month then after 3 weeks, we saw new sprouts.

しかし、この種まきに先んじて、簡易フェンスをたてなければなりませんでした．というのも、まずアンテロープがこの庭を通り道にしていたのと、向かいの高校から生徒が何人も裏の教会まで通り抜けして行くからです。この高校生たちは非常にたちが悪く、この簡易フェンスを建てたにも関わらず、隙間を通り抜けようとするのです。先日、堪忍袋の緒が切れて、とうとう苦情の手紙を高校の校長と、裏の教会の牧師、また教育委員長の所へ出しました。数日後、校長が訪ねて来て話をしましたが、「ここは長い間空き家だったから、生徒も通り抜けが習慣になってしまっていた」「隣の家の奥さんは生徒の通り抜けを気にしていない」などと、まるで、生徒に通り抜けを奨励し、苦情を言っているこちらの方が間違っているような口調です。全く飽きれました。校長がこの調子では問題の解決は余り期待できそうにありません。

However, before the seeding, we had to erect a temporary fence because antelope used our backyard for their pathway. Also the students from the High School were trespassing to go to the church behind us. These high school students are really bad in that they tried to sneak into our yard from a very small gap between the fence and the porch. We could not stand it anymore so we sent out a letter to the High School principal, the church pastor, and the superintendent. a few days later the principal of the high school came to our house and said they will try to protect the property, but the students used to pass through our yard because our house had been unoccupied for a long time. In addition, he said that the lady next door said she did not care or mind if students passed through her backyard. We are surprised at what he said as if he encouraged the students to do the trespassing and it sounded like we were the bad people because we complained. From this conversation it seems like we cannot expect anything from him.











また、ウサギがこの辺に沢山いるのですが、こいつがこの簡易フェンスを食いちぎって穴をあけ、出入りしています。きちんとしたフェンスを建てるまで問題は続きそうです。
There are many rabbits in this neighborhood and these rabbits chewed on our temporary fence and made a hole for their own pathway through our yard. It seems that these problems are continuing until we get a real fence.

The Second Summer in MT

ここモンタナ州に来て早１年が過ぎました。この夏は去年と比べて１００度Fをこえる日が少なく、過ごしやすかったといいますが、何しろ今の住居には冷房が設置されておらず私は一人家で暑い毎日を過ごしました。という事で、ブログを書く気にもならずまた、１か月ぶりになってしまった訳です。今まで貯めた写真を一気に公開します。

It has been one year since we arrived in Montana. This summer, we didn't have so many hot days like last year. It should be cooler than last year but we don't have any cooling system at home so Kozue has a difficult time to stay at home during the hot weather. Therefore, she couldn't update the blog for a while. So here are some photos we took during the summer.

１、近所の嫌われ者．．．アンテロープ
Unwanted visitors in our neighborhood ... antelope!


通りの向こうにある高校が夏休みに入り、校庭にはあまり人も見られず、それを幸いにしてかアンテロープが高校の校庭と草原を家の裏庭を通り道にして頻繁に行き来しており、追い払うのに苦労しました。春に生まれた子供達を連れて、毎日何度も家の裏庭にやってきます。
先日はついに、私が植えたべコニアの花を全て食いちぎって行きました。

The high school across the road from our house had summer vacation so not many people were around the school grounds. For antelope, that was a good time for walking around, eating the grass on the school grounds. They frequently walk through our backyard and we tried to shoo them out. However, they came through our backyard so many times per day with their new calfs. And a few days ago, they ate Kozue's flowers in the flower box.












これは隣の家の木の葉を食べている所。おかげで、下の方には全く葉は全く残っていません。
They are eating tree leaves in next door's yard. There are no leaves left on the lower part of the tree.










２、ファーマーズマーケット
Farmers' market.

7月から８月の２か月間、ダウンタウンでは毎週ファーマーズマーケットが開かれ、地元で栽培された野菜や果物等が歩行者天国に並んでいました。この中でも、目を引くのが中西部やペンシルバニアで見るアーミシュのような人たちです。詳しくは調べていないので、どのような人たちなのか良くは分かりませんが、アーミシュ風でしょ？

In July and August we have a farmers market every Saturday in downtown. We could buy local vegetables, fruit, and flowers. In this farmers market, we saw many people who look like the Amish in the Midwest, but they are Huttites. We don't know the details about them but they look like Amish people.











３、クラシックカーショウ
Classic car show.

ダウンタウンの公園で野外のクラシックカーの展示会がありました。展示会と言っても地元の人たちが乗っているクラシックカー展示だったのですが、この小さな街によくこれだけあるものだと思うくらい集まっていました。その中でも、ギャビンが持っている模型と同じ車があり、記念に写真撮影です。

In a park near downtown, we saw a classical car exhibit. The exhibit looked like it is held by locals who own classic cars. It is amazing that so many classic cars are here in this small city. And we found that there was a car that was the same model as one of Gavin's classic car models.

４、イカスミスパゲッティ
Squid ink spaghetti.

友人が送ってくれたイカスミのソースでスパゲッティを作りました。覚悟はしていたものの、本当に唇も，歯も真っ黒になってすごい事になってました。消化後はどうなるかって？
そりゃあ、あなた分かるでしょ。
Our friend sent us squid ink sauce for spaghetti so we tasted it and that was good. But as you see, we had black lips and teeth. After digestion, what happens? Of course, you can guess.











５、再びペンキ塗り。
Painting again.

暑さも少しおさまりかけた頃、玄関前にあるポーチのペンキ塗りをしました。真白にしようかとも思ったけれど、ちょっとだけ黄色。バターイエローって言う色です。このポーチはペンキも剥がれて汚く見えていたので、お化粧直しって言う所かな。少しは見栄えが良くなったとおもうのは私だけでしょうか。
The weather became cooler, then Kozue painted the front porch. We chose a butter-yellow color. The paint of the porch was peeling off and looked dirty, but after painting, looks much better.
