Nature wonderland--Yellowstone national park

Yellowstone National Park is well known as the first national park in the world. We reached the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park after 130 miles of driving. The elevation of the this entrance is still high at more than 7000 feet. The average elevation of this park is 6000 feet.
世界で初めての国立公園として有名な、Yellowstone National Park.
約１３０マイル程のドライブで Yellowstone national parkの北西部入り口に着きました。この入り口でもまだ標高７０００ft以上あります。この公園は平均でも標高は６０００ftあるそうです。

Usually you need to pay an admission fee at the entrance but we already purchased an annual pass for National Parks in August. For your information, the admission fee for one passenger vehicle is $25, valid for 7 days.
ここで入場料を払いますが、私たちは8月に国立公園の年間パスを購入していたのでそれを提示するだけでした。ちなみに料金は車一台に対し２５ドルで７日間有効。



Not too long after driving through the entrance, we saw a young bison on the side of the road. It was not so big but we are so excited to see the first wild bison. Then we saw a big herd of bison. That is Yellowstone National Park!!!
公園の入り口を抜けて間もなく念願のバイソンを発見。まだ若いバイソンでそんなに大きくはなかったのですが、初めて見た野生のバイソンに感激ともしている間に何と向こうの方にバイソンの群れが見えるではありませんか。これぞイエローストンパーク！！！

During our drive we saw some lone bison. I would say that this is Bison heaven. Also, we saw many wild animals during the drive, just like a safari park.
走行中に群れからはなれたローンバイソンもしばしば見かけ、ここはバイソン天国と言って言い過ぎではないみたい。また、様々な動物たちを車を走らせている間に見かける事が出来、サファリパークのようでした。

This is probably pronghorn which looks like a type of deer but they have white patches on their bodies.
これは多分Pronghorn と言われる鹿に似た動物。でも、からだにある白いパッチが目印になる。

This is probably elk. The neck part has dark brown fur and the rest of the body has gray and their big bottoms are impressive.
これは多分ELK。首の部分が濃い色の茶色、体が薄い灰色で大きなお尻が印象的。

This is certainly a black bear. On the previous day's news, a hunter was attacked by a bear and then the west entrance of this park was closed. According to the park newspaper we received, we should report to the park ranger if we see a bear or bear tracks so that people could avoid bear attacks.
これは間違いなく黒熊。前日のニュースでハンターが熊に襲われたのでこの公園の西口は閉鎖になっていました。この日に貰った公園新聞によると、熊を目撃した場合パークレンジャーに報告するようにとのこと。熊の所在を知る事で事故を防ぐ事ができるからだそうです。

This is Mammoth Hot Spring Terraces that are made of minerals crystallizing out from the hot water springs because of volcanic activity. Hot spring water is flowing on this terrace. Thermal resistance bacteria live in this hot spring water, therefore this hot spring is not suitable for swimming or showering. Kozue remembers that thermal resistant bacteria and habitat photos in the her Microbiology textbook was from here.
これはMammoth Hot Spring Terraceといって火山活動の副産物で結晶化したミネラルが階段状に積み重なって出来たもの。この上を高温の温泉水が流れていますが、高温耐性の細菌が 生息するため、入浴には適しません。そう言えば、Microbiologyの教科書に載っていた高温耐性の細菌とその環境写真はここだったんだ。

This is Old Faithful geyser. We waited about for about 1 hour to see this eruption. We drove about 100 miles from the entrance of the park that took us about 3 hours. According to the guidebook, this geyser is most predictable in eruption time. Around this area you can see many steam vents from the ground which is evidence of volcanic activity. In addition, we saw foreign tourists from Italy because the park is famous around the world.
これは約１時間待って見た間欠泉、Old Faithful Geyser.　ここまで来るのに公園の入り口から約１００マイル！！ここにたどり着いたのが午後４時過ぎ。公園に入ってから約３時間後です。
ガイドブックによるとこの間欠泉は世界でも噴水時刻が最も予測可能なものだそうです。規模も大きいと思う。この辺はあちらこちらから湯煙が立っており、今なお火山活動は続いています。それと、さすが世界的に有名な公園と言う事で、隣にいたグループはどうやらイタリアから来たらしい。イタリア語が飛び交っていました。



This park also has many waterfalls. This is one of them, Gibbon Falls, which has a height of 26 meters.
この公園は沢山の滝がある事でも知られているので、今回一つでも滝が見えたらと思っていたらこれ、“Gibbon Falls"で２６mの高さがあるそうな。

This trip was a day trip, so we couldn't see anymore. Next time, we need at least 3 days to see the main part of the park.
今回は日帰りと言う事で、これ以上見る事はできなかったけれど、次回改めていきたいとおもいます。その時は最低でも３日はないと主な所はまわる事ができなそうなので、充分な準備が必要ですな。

Beartooth Highway Pass

The Beartooth mountains are some of the tallest in the Rocky Mountain range in the United States. In that mountain range, the Beartooth Highway Pass goes through to Yellowstone National Park. This pass opens only from May until the middle of October. So we decided to go to Yellowstone National Park using this pass before the pass closes.
アメリカ国内のロッキー山脈の中で一番高い山がBeartooth mountainだそうで、その山の中をBeartooth Highway Pass と言う道路が山頂を通りYellowstone National Parkまで続いています。この道路は５月から１０月中旬までの約５か月間しか通ることができず、閉鎖になる前にと思いこのパスを通りYellowstone National Park まで行ってきました。

From Billings, we drove to the town of Red Lodge which is about 50 miles (1 hour) away, and the Beartooth Highway begins from this town. The beginning of the pass starts from the valley floor and then goes up gradually. During driving, the view is so panoramic. But some parts of this pass are narrow and also looks dangerous because of falling rocks. Also there are several hairpin bends.
Billings からロッキー山脈の麓町　Red lodgeまで約５０マイル（１時間）そこからそのBeartooth Highwayに入って行きます。このパスは渓谷を走る所から始まり，次第に上へとのぼって行きます。走行中に見る景色は壮大ですが、かなり狭く岩が落ちてきそうで恐い所もあり、それでも上へ上へと続いて行きます。




The first stop is Vista Point observatory, at an elevation of 9190 feet.
最初に着いた所は"Vista Point",　標高９１９０Feet の展望台です。
As you see, the mountains around here are almost the same height.
ご覧の通り、回りの山々とあまり変わらない高さにこの展望台はあり、絶景です。


We kept going up from Vista Point. This photo is the parking lot of vista point from the highway on the way to the top of the pass.
この"Vista Point"から道路はまだ上へと続きこれはその途中で撮った展望台の駐車場。こんなに登って来てしまいました。

Finally we arrived at the top of the Pass. It was 2 and a half hours after we left our apartment.
ついにハイウエ−の最高地点に到着、家を出てから約２時間半。頂上付近から見る景色。

This is the Rocky Mountain range on the opposite side. The top of the Beartooth mountains is about 12,000 feet, and the top of this highway pass is at an elevation of 10972 feet (3344 m). So the top of this highway is almost the same as the 9th station (3500 m) of Mt. Fuji. From here we drove down to Cooke City.
山頂付近から見た反対側のロッキーの山々。Beartooth mountainsの最高峰は１２０００ftで、このハイウエーの最高地点は１０９７２ ft（３３４４m）だそうです。という事は富士山の９合目（３５００m）に近い高さになります。今度はここから反対側のCooke Cityまで降りて行きます。

This side of the road has a more gentle slope and snakes downward to the valley. We took 2 and a half hours for 60 miles of Beartooth Highway. The road condition was not so bad, however of course we could not drive faster. After all, this adventurous driving was so much fun even though it took us 2 and a half hours.
山頂から反対側はなだらかな斜面を蛇行した道路が続き、幾つかの大きな湖を見ながら下って行きます。このパス６０マイル全行程にかかった時間は約２時間半。舗装道路で道路状況も良いのですが、当然高速で運転する事はできず、まあ景色を見ながらの２時間半はそう長くは感じませんでした。

Living in Montana

前回更新してから約１か月経ってしまいました。
８月中旬に無事ここビリングスに到着、その１週間後に家具等の荷物が着き、それから荷物の整理や色々な手続きに追い立てられ、やっと落ち着きました。まだ、荷物は全て片付いていませんが通常の生活に戻りつつあります。

私たちはビリングスの西側、ほとんどここが街の最西端にあるアパートに落ち着きました。街自体は端から端まで１５マイルほどでしょうか。それほど広い面積ではない所に、住宅やダウンタウン、ショッピングモールがひしめいています。私たちの近所は住宅同士の間が非常に狭く、隣の家の中が見える位くっついています。私たちのアパートは３階たての３階にあり、眺めは良いのですが部屋の中が少々暗く、特に台所は日中でも電気をつけなければなりません。入居前に下見ができていればこんな所もチェックできたのですが、オハイオから入居のできるアパートをインターネットで探して決めたのでそうもいかず残念でした。また来年、引っ越しになるかも。

これが私たちの住んでいるアパート。

この街はRimrock（下の写真）という断崖でまるで城壁のように囲まれています。そのせいか冬は他の地域に比べて暖かいという事です。とは言うものの、この所気温が低く毎日５０〜６０Fくらいまでしか気温は上がりません。夜は気温もグンと下がり、４０F程です。山脈付近は２９Fまで下がっている模様。
今日はぼんやりとでも、ロッキー山脈が見えたので写真を撮ったのですが、白いものが山の上に見える、、、雪かな？（写真をクリックして下さい、大きくなります）

モンタナはBig Sky Countryといわれていますが、確かに空は大きく見えます。というのもこの辺には遮る森林等がないからだと思うのですが。虹もこんな感じで見えます。


モンタナ州の３分の２は草原／平原で東部はセミデザートというくらい降水量も少ないそうです。私たちがこの街に来る途中見たのは枯れ草の広大な平原で、その中にぽつんぽつんと牛の集団がいるくらいでした。来た時期が良くなかったのか、砂漠の砂を枯れ草に変えただけの様な黄色の大地が永遠に続いているように見えました。

こんな枯れ草大地が永遠に続いていた。
